List of the complications
involved in:
Doing an arterial blood gas (ABG)
· Bleeding at injection site
· Hematoma
· Infection
· Fainting
IV Injections
· Bleeding
· Phlebitis
· Hypotension
· Air embolism
· Fever
· Infection
2)
ABG
Why the complication
can occur?
Because people may
have coagulation defects, circulatory
compromise at the limb, inadequate
collateral arteries practicing Allen test or local infection
or bruising at the puncture site.
When they can occur?
Complications arise
when hygiene standards are not
met or are holding a proper management
technique or genetic
defects exist in the patient.
What are the chances of the patient having them?
Patients may
present complications are those
with medical history such as
diabetes and other diseases
involving coagulation defects.
This also occurs in patients who have a weakened immune system.
IV Injection
Why the complication
can occur?
Because poor
aseptic zone is
done or inject the drug has expired
When they can occur?
when organisms
are introduced by a contaminated needle
or the patient is allergic to the medication which
can cause anaphylaxis.
What are the chances of the patient having them?
Patients may
present with these complications when intravenous injection is applied by an untrained professional.

IV Injections complications
- The Edema sometimes occurs when the drug is accidentally injected into the perivascular tissue occurring inflammation or necrosis at that level.
- Some people have phlebitis by inflammation of the lining of the vein which is caused by local action of the drug.
- There are some people who can get an infection like hepatitis B or AIDS when a reusable poorly sterilized equipment is used. After a subject infected injecting equipment is contaminated, and if this is not well sterilized there is a risk of transmitting the infection to another person who is injected with the same equipment.
- Occasionally, an intravenous injection can cause sudden drop in blood pressure that occurs with dizziness, loss of consciousness, nausea, vomiting and even death within minutes.
- Pierce the vein rarely causes bleeding so that blood escapes perivascular tissue forming a hematoma that may disappear spontaneously.
- Fever may occur after 1 to 3 hours before applying a EV injection, especially if it is high volume manifested by hyperthermia up to 40 ° C.
- Air embolism is produced by injecting air into the circulation by the nurse, but this does not happen to everyone.
